Kalamkari is an ancient Indian traditional art form in which hand-painting or block painting is done on cotton fabrics using natural dyes. This spellbinding art form draws its origin from Andhra Pradesh and is known for its unique way of depicting  tales from Ramayana and Mahabharata using figurines, flowers, paisleys, buds, leaves and an alluring mix of natural and human figures and designs. The designs are captivating and are known for their artistic forms. The word Kalamkari is derived from the Persian word ‘Qalam’ (pen) and ‘Kari’(art). The art of Kalamkari is a technique-sensitive process involving a series of complex steps involving bleaching, mordanting, sketching , drawing, dyeing using natural dyes and drying. In ancient times, all these processes were hand-made, but with the advent of new technology, some steps are now done using machines. The beauty of this art form is not just in its aesthetic look, but it also showcases the rich cultural heritage of our country.
